It’s almost Post Time…. The Belmont Stakes will crown a new Champion on Saturday. At the same time, we’ll see a Triple Crown Winner
Wow! I’m going out on my limb again… but the horse (Big Brown) hasn’t let me down yet. Judging from the way he finished the Preakness (5+ lengths ahead of the competition – AND ears forward AND eager to run some more) after that very impressive acceleration he exhibited at the head of the stretch…. I can only repeat: WOW! Read the rest…
“I was hoping maybe he banged it on side of the wall. He’s getting pretty aggressive when walks in afternoon, and really bossing people around,” said Rick Dutrow Jr, Big Brown’s Trainer, “But I knew in my heart he was developing something that I didn’t want to see.”
Dutrow first noticed something was amiss when one of his grooms called him over on Friday after a morning gallop. Read the rest…
Big Brown is now at Belmont Park, in Bobby Frankel’s barn. He awaits the biggest race of his young life. The Belmont Stakes! The third and final jewel in the coveted Triple Crown.
There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since 1978 when Affirmed won it!
Big Brown’s supposed biggest competition will come from an import from Japan. The race will however include other spoilers, horses that faced Big Brown in the Preakness Stakes. Namely, the second and third place finishers: Macho Again and Icabad Crane. And we can expect to see some of his race mates from the Kentucky Derby. Nick Zito is reportedly considering entering Anak Nakal.
OK, Big Brown looks unbeatable right now. That makes our job much tougher. Why? Because he’s going off at odds at 1 – 2 or worse. So picking the winner might seem easy, but the odds make it unbettable because anything can and does happen in horseracing.
The Preakness Stakes will be contested at Pimlico Race Track in
Baltimore, MD this Saturday, May 17th, 2008.
As I reported, Recapturetheglory was removed from the race due to “Fever”. So, that left Big Brown to be the only Kentucky Derby horse to attempt The Preakness (first time since Citation, 60 years ago).
Derby Trial winner Macho Again is in for Saturday’s 134th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
I predicted that Recapturetheglory was not talented enough to take on the Preakness, and it proved correct. Although, the connections stated Read the rest…
Consider this: Introduce a new, exotic bet that is so hard to hit that it carries over day after day after day, builds a huge pool, and therefore garners tons of publicity.
It’s a no-brainer…. Great for the track, and great for the sport. Someone will eventually hit the big jackpot!
This is what Churchill Downs had going for it. They have a bet they call the Super Hi-5. To win, you must pick the first five horses in the race in the correct finishing order. That’s a huge task and the pool proves it:
At 6:15pm EDT on May 17th, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland at the Pimlico Race Track, history will be made.
Big Brown (the Winner of the Kentucky Derby) WILL win The Preakness.
Then, having won the first two jewels in the Triple Crown, Big Brown WILL go on to win the Belmont Stakes and become the first Triple Crown Winner Since Affirmed in 1978.
Post Kentucky Derby Primer: Evaluating, planning and re-thinking Horse Racing.
There’s a lot to consider. The glory that is the Kentucky Derby was dampened by the death of Eight Belles following the race of her life.
It’s reopened debates, significantly; synthetic surfaces and breeding practices.
There are proponents of the new synthetic tracks (they’ve reduced injuries to the horses by 40% in California). There are opponents to the synthetic tracks. The 19th and 20th (last place) horses in the Kentucky Derby qualified for the event by winning their prep races on synthetic surfaces, and Adriano (19th) is headed back to the turf – no more dirt!
Was there EVER any doubt? Yeah, there was… Just like always, as the start of the Kentucky Derby neared, I began to second-guess myself… but over the many years of this, I’ve learned to ignore those tugs, and stick with my research, my figures, and my original choices.
So, Big Brown was it! …and Big Brown would carry me through! And he played the field like a violin! He was well-placed into the first turn, drafting on the leaders… ears forward… Read the rest…
Finally, the field is in place! After all the normal (and sometimes abnormal) hoopla leading up to the 134th running of the Kentucky Derrby – 2008, the post positions were drawn today.
So now we know which of the thousands of horses nominated for The Run For The Roses will actually race this coming Saturday at Churchill Downs… but we now also know from which post position each horse will launch his/her attempt at making history.
Here are the post positions with probable early odds…
