Okay… it’s set, and if nothing unforeseen happens, the Preakness Stakes this coming Saturday is ready for your handicapping skills. Today, the post positions were chosen and the odds were announced. Horse races are not an easy thing to conquer, and if you’re like me, you missed the Kentucky Derby by 6 3/4 lengths. I had “Pioneerof The Nile” and he was the clear winner… until the not-so-clear winner trounced him and the rest of the field.

Here are the announced post positions and Odds:

Horses to start the Preakness
Now, there’s another question mark when considering the filly “Rachel Alexandra”. She’s breaking from the 13 hole; the last post position. The connections not surprisingly, are saying it’s great because she’s not surrounded by boys, there’s no one on her right in the gate. Hmmm, they’d be happy with the boys around her if she were closer to the rail… say around 3 – 7 or so!

I’ve already given you my choice for the winner (see a previous post), and I’m stickin’ with it! I’m even very happy with the odds as they stand. (But not so happy with my pick’s post position).

The speed horses are well spread: (#s: 10, 4, 8, 3, 9)

That’s enough speed to produce an up-front duel. Therefore, the stalkers look good (#s: 1, 5, 2, 9, 13, 6). And yes, #9 qualifies twice. I don’t give much hope to the real closers (#s: 7, 11, 12). It looks like there’s going to be a charge to the first turn, a real battle for position. In fact, the race will possibly be over right there! I believe that if my pick is well placed going into the turn, we will not lose!

I can’t wait for Saturday…
